DelVal Hosts First Annual Girl’s Freestyle Wrestling Camp Featuring Wrestlers with National and Olympic Pedigrees
Leigh Jaynes, head coach of the women’s wrestling team and World Medalist, is leading DelVal’s first annual Girl’s Freestyle Wrestling camp, along with several experienced clinicians. The camp is in session from July 25 to July 28, with ages K-12 in attendance. Any and all skills levels are welcome.
During the camp, girls are given the opportunity to train with highly skilled, college-level wrestlers and learn from DelVal's coaching staff with national and Olympic pedigrees.
"The caliber of the coaches we are bringing in here -- they are amazing women in the wrestling community," said Jaynes.
The camp focuses on technical development, live and situational wrestling, strength and conditioning, agility, nutrition, mindset. Wrestlers will be doing circuit training and working on their technique. Guest speakers will work with the girls on mental performance and positive thinking for a nonphysical practice. The goal is for each student to leave with the ability to apply techniques on their own, and self-correct when mistakes are made.
“I want the girls to leave with new tools in their toolbox, so that they can feel a little bit more confident about taking shots, getting into certain positions while wrestling, and comfortability,” said Jaynes. “I want to develop each individual person based on their body type and style.”
While training is important, so is having fun! Activities like game night, scavenger hunts, movie night, pizza parties, and more are also scheduled.
Jaynes compares wrestling to problem-solving.
“Wrestling is like problem-solving from the start of your career, all the way to the very end of your career,” said Jaynes. “You're figuring out how to get a win, using various techniques because your opponent is also adapting, and they're evolving as well.”
